Volunteer
Summer swim team is a hands-on family experience. The swim team Board is made up of volunteers and the team cannot function without volunteers.
Every family is required to volunteer in some way at every meet.
There are many different ways a family can help either before, during, and after a meet. If volunteering on meet days is impossible, please get in touch with the team volunteer coordinator, Lindsay Housely, at [email protected] to see how you can help behind the scenes.
If you need to cancel a volunteer sign up, please make every effort to find a replacement. Please see explanation of volunteer roles below and sign up to assist in some way at each meet.
At least one person per family needs to volunteer at every meet. Our meets cannot be successful without our volunteers and meets will not start without certain positions being filled. Have a older child who doesn't swim with the team? We can sign them off on volunteer hours for NHS, Scouts, etc.
Volunteer Roles “How to” List:
Meet Set Up: Set up for meet prior to swimmer arrival. For questions, please contact our head equipment manager, Lindsay Boney. All meets.
Swimmer Check-in: Check swimmers in at entry table - report absences 10 minutes prior to start of meet to scoring table. Available ALL Meets.
Concession Pre-Meet Set Up: Set up concession stands prior to swimmer arrival. Home meets only.
Concession Stand Helper: Sell food and drink items from concession stands, replenish as needed. Split into two equal shifts. For questions, contact our head of concessions - Diana Anthony. Home meets only.
Judge DQ Slip Runner: Run DQ slips and time sheets from judges and timers to scorekeeper. Home meets only.
Timers: Attend timers' meeting right before swim meet starts to gain instruction, even if you have done it before. Timers time each event and each heat in their lane and one person in lane records times from each timer. The 2nd half timers also attend meeting and switch half way around event 30. BEST view of your swimmer ~ Available ALL meets.
Alternate Timers: Attend timers' meeting right before swim meet starts to gain instruction, even if you have done it before. Alternate timers are to be ready to take over for a timer if needed or fill a slot if we are short timers. Again, BEST view of swimmers ~ Available ALL meets.
Head Timer: Wear 2 timers and sit with officials. Time when buzzer sounds and stop when LAST swimmer gets out of pool. Sit in shade near ref and starter. Home meets.
Ready Bench and Ready Bench Assistant: Gather swimmers and line them up on the ready bench in correct sequence for events. Ready bench also takes swimmers to their lanes in order and by position. Line ups for relays. Available ALL meets.
Clean Up: Clean up cones, event/heat stands, flags, ready bench, trash, pool furniture and all else to get out of meet with speed and respect for our home and away meets. Available ALL meets.
Officials: Stroke and Turn judge (must attend training with MSSL,). All meets. Contact Team Reps for this slot. *FILLED*
PIT PARENTS (By Age Group and Gender): These parents listen to the announcer and begin locating their swimmers about 2
events prior to the "first call" for an event. The Pit Parents for the youngest ages (6 & under and 7-8)
are critical to the timely start of the meet. About 15 minutes prior to the start of a meet, pit parent
for these ages begin organizing their swimmers. Younger swimmers are personally escorted to the ready bench
for each event. 2-3 volunteers slots per
gender per age group. Volunteers are expected to plan to work every meet or find substitutes if unable
to attend. This is a season long position and Pit Parents stay with their assigned Pit for the entire
meet. For questions, contact our head pit parent, Lindsay Boney. Must commit to ALL Meets.
